Little-heralded ‘Medium’ gives NBC a boost in the ratings

mainPatricia Arquette has gotten accustomed to the comments from fans who don’t seem to know that she’s still on television.

“I definitely have people every day grab me on the street saying, ‘When is your show coming back, why did they cancel it?’ ” said Arquette, who stars in “Medium,” NBC’s drama about a psychic who helps solve crimes while juggling the quotidian challenges of middle-class family life.

In fact, “Medium” returned to the air this month for its fifth season, which finds Arquette’s character, Allison DuBois, back assisting the Phoenix district attorney’s office, the fallout from her public exposure now largely subsided. The return of the series wasn’t accompanied by the fanfare of other mid-season premieres like “American Idol” or “Lost.” But the under-the-radar drama continues to draw a loyal fan base that gravitates to the program’s cleverly packed mysteries and unsentimental depiction of a marriage.

In its first three episodes this year, “Medium” averaged 8.5 million viewers, making it NBC’s sixth-most-watched scripted series of the season. The show has attracted 45% more viewers than NBC’s earlier 10 p.m. Monday programming, which included “My Own Worst Enemy” and “Momma’s Boys.”

It’s a solid performance for a drama that does not get a huge marketing boost or generate much chatter in the zeitgeist.

Hilary Duff Shopping At Whole FoodsSituated back out on the west coast following her trip to New York City for Fashion Week, Hilary Duff was spotted taking care of her shopping needs in Studio City on Friday morning (February 20).

The former “Lizzie McGuire” starlet dropped by her local Whole Foods, looking ever-so-stylish as she pushed out her cartful of goodies while chatting on the phone.

Meanwhile, Miss Duff recently sat down to talk about her upcoming guest role on “Ghost Whisperer”, telling press, “Jennifer Love Hewitt’s one of my friends, and we were having dinner one night. She’s like, ‘Come be on my show. You know, we’re almost finished.’ I’m like, ‘Give me a part. I’ll do it.’ And it just kind of came about really naturally and organically like that.”

Talking about her character, she adds, “I’m kind of being haunted by someone that I was in a relationship with before they passed away. He had unfinished business with me, and I’m having nightmares of being turned upside down in my apartment, like when I’m sleeping on the bed, I’m actually going to be hanging from the ceiling.”

Be sure to tune in to CBS, with Hilary’s episode of “Ghost Whisperer” airing on Friday, April 9 at 9 p.m.

E! orders ‘Hot Girls in Scary Places’

Hot Girls in Scary Places

Hot Girls in Scary Places

E! has ordered new reality project that puts an all-girl spin on the paranormal investigation genre.

The show is called “Hot Girls in Scary Places” and, yes, that is the finest unscripted project name to come along in awhile. It’s a title. It’s a logline. It’s a title and a logline, with a “Snakes on a Plane”-style self-deprecating bluntness. Probably the best, if not the bestest, since Fuse’s “Pants Off, Dance Off.”

The show stars three University of Southern California cheer squad friends challenged to spend the night in a supposedly haunted abandoned hospital for a cash prize of $10,000 (which would pay for maybe half a semester at USC). To get the prize, the trio will have to complete a series of challenges.

“They’re totally scared, and totally believe experiences they’re going through,” says executive producer Gary Auerbach. “They’ll get scared and then be talking about a sorority party coming up. It’s a little bit ‘Scooby Doo’-ish.”

“Hot Girls” will premiere as a special and is tentatively scheduled to air on Friday the 13th next month month (yes, March has one too). The project from Go Go Luckey (A&E’s “Paranormal State” and Animal Planet’s “Jockeys”) and it’s considered a special/backdoor pilot.

The Bold and The Beautiful’s Lesli Kay

Talk about life imitating art. Three soap opera actors will be playing, well, soap opera actors on an upcoming episode of Ghost Whisperer. The Young and the Restless’s Thad Luckinbill (J.T.), Amelia Heinle (Victoria) and The Bold and The Beautiful’s Lesli Kay (Felicia) will be making an appearance on the April 24th episode.

E! orders new paranormal show with a twist

Listen: E! orders new paranormal show with a twist

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. E! Television has ordered a new reality television pilot that is similar to Sci Fi’s Ghost Hunters in its premise with one notable difference: all the investigators are hot girls.

The fanbase for this show can be split into two groups: those that love hot women and those that hate hot women. The lovers will watch it for the eye candy and the haters will watch to see the eye candy humiliate themselves on camera (which is the purpose of 99% of the reality shows on television anyway).

This sounds like a movie by Adam Sandler’s production company. It’s The House Bunny meets Ghostbusters. Granted, the women are simply competing for a $10,000 prize and not doing any actual investigation. This is such a humorous premise that I would expect it to end with a Blair Witch parody by having one of the women standing in the corner while the camera falls down.
